FoSC concert 21 8 11
FoSC concert 21 8 11 (1)

Two scenes from the cream tea party (not to be confused with the American Tea Party) after a lovely concert in the church on Sunday 21 August.

This was the first event organised by the Friends of Swainswick church and we are hoping to hold many more over the coming years. First and foremost, we want to organise things that people will enjoy, but we’re also aiming to raise money to help towards the cost of repairs and maintenance of the church building. If you have ideas for any future events in or around the church or would like to be involved in the Friends, we would love to hear from you.

Bell Ringing at St Mary’s Church Swainswick

From small beginnings…………………………..

In 1999 there was only one person in the parish who could ring the church bells. This created a bit of a problem for weddings but luckily Roger Button, an experienced instructor, agreed to teach willing learners. So every Thursday evening for a year there was a practice in the ringing chamber and by 1st January 2000 there were six people in the parish who could ring in St Mary’s for the Millennium.

Since then a good number of other people in this parish and from other parishes have learnt to ring and met regularly for bell practice at 7pm on Thursday evenings and also at Church Services on the first Sunday each month and at weddings. The ages of the bell ringers have varied from those learning at twelve to the tower master who is eighty seven.

All experienced bell ringers are welcome to come on Thursday night at 7pm and ring with us. We also welcome all new comers who may want to learn with their parents, if under the age of eighteen. Anyone wishing to join should come to the Church on a Thursday evening between 7 and 8 pm.
